A bed frame is bought by what stands under the mattress, and the shelf is sorted that way. The metal platform frames are a steel grid on legs, 14 inches high, with 11.9 to 18 inches of clearance for storage boxes depending on the frame and no box spring needed; they are the cheapest frames and the ones most people have rated. The solid wood platforms put slats in a pine frame with a headboard. The upholstered frames wrap a wingback headboard in fabric or teddy boucle; the adjustable bases raise the head and the feet on a motor. Every one prints its frame height, and you add your own mattress to it to know where you will sleep.

The children's frames are a shelf inside the shelf. The house bed frames put a roof over a twin mattress, with a trundle for a sleepover on one and a bookshelf and desk on another; the floor bed keeps a toddler a few inches off the rug behind a fence of guardrails. The twin-over-twin bunk beds carry both guardrails and a ladder, and the federal rule that the rail tops stand at least 5 inches above the mattress is the reason to choose a thin mattress for the top bunk. The commission's bunk bed guidance is on this page in full, and its advice that a child under six sleeps below is older than the standard.

Before the ladder goes up

Bunk beds have a federal standard of their own, and the numbers in it are worth knowing before the ladder goes up. The upper bunk needs a guardrail on both sides, the rail on the wall side running the full length of the bed, and the tops of the rails must stand at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress: a thicker mattress than the frame was cut for eats that margin. No opening at the end of the upper bunk above the mattress may be wide enough for the commission's wedge block, which is a stand-in for a child's body. The commission classes children's bunk beds as beds for children 12 and under, and its long-standing advice is that a child under six sleeps on the bottom bunk. Our twin-over-twin frames carry both rails and the ladder; the mattress thickness, the age of the child and the wall the bed stands against are yours to check.

DUMOS Bed Frame: questions

What people ask us about bed frame before they pick a piece.

Does a DUMOS bed frame need a box spring?

No. The platform frames, metal and wood, carry the mattress on a steel grid or on slats, and the height on the card is the frame alone. The upholstered and adjustable frames are platforms too.

How much weight does a DUMOS metal bed frame hold?

We state the figure and the card prints it: 750 to 880 lb on the queen and king platforms, which is the mattress and two adults with room to spare. The bunk beds state a figure per bunk.

Is the DUMOS bunk bed safe for a five-year-old on top?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has advised for decades that a child under six sleeps on the bottom bunk, and its standard for the frame, two guardrails with their tops at least 5 inches above the mattress, is met by ours with a mattress no thicker than the page states. The rule about the child is yours to keep.
