Criss-cross chairs with a seat wide enough to fold your legs, armless chairs that slide under a vanity, mesh and PU leather chairs with lumbar support, gaming chairs with a footrest, and two big-and-tall seats, every one printing its capacity.

02What decides it
Criss-cross chairs with a seat wide enough to sit cross-legged, armless vanity and drafting chairs, ergonomic and gaming chairs with lumbar support and footrests, big-and-tall and executive seats.
Nobody holds a textbook posture for eight hours, and the chairs on this shelf are sorted by what you do instead. If you tuck a foot under you, the criss-cross seat is wide enough to do it without the armrest in your shin, and it is the chair we are known for. If you sit at a vanity or a narrow desk, the armless chair slides all the way under when you stand. If you lean back at four in the afternoon, the gaming chair reclines and the footrest comes out. The word ergonomic appears on many of them; what it means, in OSHA's words, is on this page too.
Read three figures before you choose. The weight capacity, 250 to 350 lb on most of these, 275 on the gaming chairs and higher on the big-and-tall seats, is our stated figure and stands on every card. The seat height range decides whether your feet rest flat with your knees level with your hips, which is the posture OSHA describes, and a footrest closes the gap if the desk is fixed. The base width decides whether the five casters fit under your desk at all; it is wider than the chair looks in the photograph.
The word ergonomic on a chair is a promise about your body, so here is what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration means by it in its computer workstation guidance. A backrest that follows the natural curve of your spine and supports the lower back; a seat that lets your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest; armrests, if the chair has them, that let your shoulders relax with your elbows close to your body; and a base with five legs on casters. The desk puts the monitor straight in front of you at least 20 inches away, with nothing stored under it where your legs go. OSHA adds the sentence that matters most: sitting still for a long time is not healthy however good the posture, and the cure is to change position, stand and walk during the day. A chair with lumbar support and a desk that rises are tools for that; neither is a treatment for a back that already hurts, which is a question for a doctor.
Every sentence in this note about safety comes from a named public source. All of them, with the date we read them, are on our updates page.

03Asked in this room
The three things people ask us about office chairs before they choose a piece.
The criss-cross chair, the piece we are known for. The seat is cut wide with no armrests, so a folded leg has nowhere to bruise, and the back is a low curve rather than a tall shell. It comes in fabric, PU leather and teddy, on casters or on fixed feet for a vanity.
What OSHA says it means: a backrest that follows the curve of your spine with lumbar support, a seat that lets your feet rest flat, armrests that let your shoulders relax, and a five-leg base on casters. The chairs here that carry the word carry those parts. OSHA adds that no chair makes sitting still for hours healthy; standing and moving does that.
The gaming chairs with a footrest recline to 135 degrees, past the OSHA reclined-sitting angle of 105 to 120, and pull a footrest out from under the seat, which is what the reviews use them for at lunchtime. The capacity on the card is for sitting; a reclined chair with the footrest out is rated the same but balances differently, so keep the casters on a hard floor.
