02What decides it

A desk measured against your wall, not your screen

Small computer desks from 31 inches, L-shaped and gaming desks with LED strips and power outlets, electric standing desks from 40 to 63 inches, walking-pad desks and rolling laptop tables.

The width on the card is the number that sends desks back. A 48-inch top wants a 50-inch wall once the chair is pushed under and the cable has somewhere to go, and an L-shaped desk wants a corner with nothing on either wall for the length of both arms. So measure trim to trim first, then read the widths here: the small computer desks start at 31 inches for a bedroom alcove, the electric standing desks run 40, 48, 55 and 63, and the two 67-inch L-shaped gaming desks are the largest pieces on the shelf.

Height is the second number, and it is the reason the standing desks exist. OSHA's guidance for a workstation is a monitor straight ahead at least 20 inches away, forearms parallel to the floor, and a change of posture during the day, standing included. An electric desk rises at a button to the height you set; the rolling desks rise by a pneumatic lever and roll to the sofa; the walking-pad desk stands over a treadmill. Under every one of them the space is meant for your legs, and OSHA says not to store the computer tower there.

What a desk has to do, in OSHA's words

The word ergonomic on a chair is a promise about your body, so here is what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration means by it in its computer workstation guidance. A backrest that follows the natural curve of your spine and supports the lower back; a seat that lets your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest; armrests, if the chair has them, that let your shoulders relax with your elbows close to your body; and a base with five legs on casters. The desk puts the monitor straight in front of you at least 20 inches away, with nothing stored under it where your legs go. OSHA adds the sentence that matters most: sitting still for a long time is not healthy however good the posture, and the cure is to change position, stand and walk during the day. A chair with lumbar support and a desk that rises are tools for that; neither is a treatment for a back that already hurts, which is a question for a doctor.

Every sentence in this note about safety comes from a named public source. All of them, with the date we read them, are on our updates page.

DUMOS desks and workstations: questions

The three things people ask us about desks and workstations before they choose a piece.

How high does a DUMOS electric standing desk go?

The electric desks rise from 28.7 inches to 46.5 at the touch of a button, with memory presets on most, and the height range is on each page. OSHA's standing posture wants your forearms parallel to the floor at the keyboard, which for most adults falls between 40 and 46 inches; measure from the floor to your bent elbow and check it against the height range before you choose a width.

Is a DUMOS L-shaped desk reversible for your corner?

The 50-inch reversible desk is built either way, with the CPU shelf on the left or the right, and the corner gaming desks and L-shaped computer desks state on their pages which way the return goes. Measure both walls of the corner from the angle outward and read them against the two arm lengths on the card; the return is the number people forget.

Can a DUMOS rolling desk stand in for a standing desk?

For a laptop, yes. The rolling desks rise by a pneumatic lever from about 28 to 43 inches and roll to a sofa or a bed, and the reviews use them as a sit-stand desk for one screen. They are narrow, 19 to 28 inches, and they hold a laptop and a mug rather than two monitors; the electric desks are the ones for a full workstation.
