The plain computer desk is bought on one number, and it is the width. A 31 or 32-inch top fits the alcove beside a bedroom closet; 40 and 48 fit a wall shared with a bookshelf; 55 and 63 are for a wall of their own. Measure trim to trim, subtract for whatever stands beside the desk, and leave two inches for the chair and the cable. The 32-inch family most people have rated stiffens its frame with an X-brace across the back, and that brace is what lets a reviewer lean on it; the desks with drawers and a side hook keep the pens off the top and the bag off the floor.

OSHA has two rules for any desk and both are about the space, not the top. The monitor should sit straight in front of you at least 20 inches away, which on a 20-inch-deep top means the screen at the back edge; and the space under the top is for your legs, not for the computer tower. The compact desk with a monitor stand and two drawers raises the screen without a second stand. What a desk has to do, in OSHA's words

The word ergonomic on a chair is a promise about your body, so here is what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration means by it in its computer workstation guidance. A backrest that follows the natural curve of your spine and supports the lower back; a seat that lets your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest; armrests, if the chair has them, that let your shoulders relax with your elbows close to your body; and a base with five legs on casters. The desk puts the monitor straight in front of you at least 20 inches away, with nothing stored under it where your legs go. OSHA adds the sentence that matters most: sitting still for a long time is not healthy however good the posture, and the cure is to change position, stand and walk during the day. A chair with lumbar support and a desk that rises are tools for that; neither is a treatment for a back that already hurts, which is a question for a doctor.

What is the smallest DUMOS computer desk?

The 31 and 32-inch desks, and of the small ones the 32-inch desk with the X-brace is the one with the larger pool of ratings. At 19.7 inches deep it holds a laptop and a monitor at the back edge, and the X-brace behind it is the reason it does not rock.

Do DUMOS computer desks come with drawers?
