The reason to change the height of a desk is one sentence from OSHA: sitting still for a long time is not healthy however good the posture, and the cure is to change position, stand and walk. The electric desks do that at a button. A motor in each leg raises the top from sitting height to standing, memory presets hold the two heights you use, and the widths run 40, 48, 55 and 63 inches so the same mechanism suits an alcove and a wall. Read the width against your wall from trim to trim, and read the height range against your elbow: standing, your forearms should be parallel to the floor at the keyboard.
The rolling desks are the other half of the page and a different idea: a single column on a pneumatic spring, a top from 19 to 28 inches wide, and casters. You raise it by a lever, and you roll it to the sofa, the bed or the window. It carries a laptop and a mug rather than two monitors, and the reviews use it as a sit-stand desk for one screen. The walking-pad desk is a narrow 31.5-inch top on legs tall enough to stand over a treadmill, for the person who has read the OSHA sentence and taken it literally.
What a desk has to do, in OSHA's words
The word ergonomic on a chair is a promise about your body, so here is what the Occupational Safety and Health Administration means by it in its computer workstation guidance. A backrest that follows the natural curve of your spine and supports the lower back; a seat that lets your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest; armrests, if the chair has them, that let your shoulders relax with your elbows close to your body; and a base with five legs on casters. The desk puts the monitor straight in front of you at least 20 inches away, with nothing stored under it where your legs go. OSHA adds the sentence that matters most: sitting still for a long time is not healthy however good the posture, and the cure is to change position, stand and walk during the day. A chair with lumbar support and a desk that rises are tools for that; neither is a treatment for a back that already hurts, which is a question for a doctor.
